A Special Announcement: Growing Our Family - Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Hello everyone,
I’m absolutely thrilled to share some wonderful personal news with our Connected Chiropractic family - I’m expecting! Our little one is due in mid-October, and I couldn’t be more excited to embark on this incredible journey.
As both a chiropractor and an expectant mother, I wanted to take this opportunity to share how I’m prioritising my health and wellbeing throughout this pregnancy, particularly through chiropractic care and preparation strategies that I’ve learnt from experience.

Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy: My Personal Experience
One of the questions I’m often asked is whether chiropractic adjustments are safe during pregnancy. According to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and other established healthcare guidance, chiropractic care can be provided safely during pregnancy by a qualified professional with appropriate training in pregnancy care (RCOG, 2015).
During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes remarkable changes. The pelvis widens, the spine curves more dramatically to accommodate the growing bump, and hormonal changes affect ligament stability. These natural adaptations can sometimes lead to discomfort, back pain, and changes in posture and movement patterns.
What I particularly value about my chiropractic care during pregnancy is how each treatment is tailored to my needs at every stage. In the first trimester, my care focuses on maintaining comfort as hormonal changes begin. During the second trimester, as my centre of gravity shifts, treatments help me manage the changes in my spinal curves and any associated discomfort. By the third trimester, techniques become even more gentle and supportive, incorporating pregnancy-specific positioning and modified approaches.
There are specific techniques developed for pregnancy care, such as the Webster Technique, which aims to balance the pelvis and can help support comfort during pregnancy. For me personally, regular chiropractic care has been helping me feel more comfortable and better able to adapt to the changes my body is experiencing.
Learning from Experience: Adding Strength Training This Time
Reflecting on my previous pregnancy experience, one thing I wish I’d prioritised more was maintaining and building strength throughout. This time, I’m incorporating a well-structured strength training programme alongside my chiropractic care, and I can already feel the benefits.
Pregnancy-appropriate strength training, when done safely and under appropriate guidance, can complement chiropractic care by supporting muscle tone and joint stability (ACOG, 2020). Building and maintaining muscle strength helps support my changing spine and pelvis, and I’ve found it helpful in managing the physical demands of pregnancy. It’s also part of my preparation for the challenges ahead.
I’m focusing on exercises that target core stability (adapted for pregnancy), glute strength, and postural muscles - all of which work in harmony with the spinal alignment I’m maintaining through chiropractic treatments. It’s fascinating to experience how these two approaches work together so effectively.

What I love about our holistic approach at Connected Chiropractic is how we view health as an interconnected system. My pregnancy care isn’t just about managing symptoms - it’s about supporting my body’s natural ability to adapt during this incredible journey.
For me, the combination of regular chiropractic care, appropriate exercise, balanced nutrition, and stress management creates a strong foundation that helps me feel my best. Every adjustment helps me feel more comfortable and better able to cope with the changes my body is experiencing.
