How to stay happy and healthy in lockdown

As we enter another period of tighter restrictions, it’s important to us that all members of our Connected community feel prepared, mentally and physically, for the time ahead. That includes making a plan to keep your spine and mind healthy and happy in lockdown.

While we’re very glad to still be able to provide Chiropractic care during lockdown,  we’re sadly unable to offer massage appointments until restrictions lift. With massage and lots of other daily joys out of reach for now, we thought we’d share some tips to help you get through this lockdown.

Try to keep a sense of normality

It’s certainly tough to feel any sense of normalcy this year – and despite how many times we hear it, the ‘new normal’ doesn’t quite feel normal yet.

While things might feel a bit up in the air, there are plenty of things we can all do to keep things ticking along.

Do you usually call your friend on a Tuesday? Or go for a walk on a Sunday? Try to keep to your routine where restrictions allow. The sense of normalcy and purpose a bit of routine brings is amazing – and having things to achieve makes our brains and bodies feel great.

Try the ‘fake commute’ method

Do you miss your morning commute? Well, perhaps not the reality of it but possibly the sense of normality it brings. Separating work from home life can be difficult without a commute, so we recommend adding a fake one into your day and taking the chance to do something nice for yourself.

If you are working from home, use the time you would have spent getting to and from work and do something for yourself or your health. A walk, some exercises or stretches, journal or even some mindfulness exercises and breathing. And then do something similar or different on your way home.

By bookending your day with something intentional, you create boundaries and protect your all-important headspace. You may have been working from home a long time, it may be wearing thin, it may be going on for far too long without a clear end in sight. So all we can do is choose to do things to look after ourselves and our whole health.

Try your ‘fake commute’ and let us know how you get on!

Keep moving

Chiropractic care is all about improving the connection between mind and body so that our brains are more aware of how our body is working mechanically. According to research by Dr Heidi Haavik, we know that when our brain and bodies communicate more effectively, your brain can also keep better tabs on how everything is working, leading to an improvement in your health and wellbeing.

Just because you can’t do the usual things you would at this time doesn’t mean you can’t keep your body moving to benefit your wellbeing. We recommend taking time from your busy schedule to dedicate specifically to get your body moving.

Step away from your desk (or the kitchen table, or your ironing board) for twenty minutes and move in a way that feels good to you.

Although we can’t see you for massage appointments until restrictions lift, now is the perfect time to focus on your physical health and arrange a chiropractic assessment with us. We’ll be able to talk through your goals and make adjustments to get your spine moving better.

The more we move, the better our bodies feel and the stronger the connection between our brain and body. So whether it’s a quick yoga flow, a zoom workout or just a dance party in your living room – keep moving your way through lockdown.

Make time for the things and people you love

We all know the importance of looking after your mental health and wellbeing in normal times, but now more than ever, it’s vital. Our mental health has a huge impact on our physical health and vice versa.

Did you know that pain signals can be sent to an area of the body when your brain thinks there’s an issue or risk of tissue damage, but this might not actually be the case? Keeping your body moving and your head clear can help the brain send the correct messages around the body.

Our top tip is to make time for the people and activities you love to stay connected. As the days draw shorter, it might be nice to cosy up with your favourite hot drink and catch up with a friend, return to an old hobby or maybe start a new one.

If you’re stuck for ideas, here’s a list of 48 things to do to keep yourself busy during lockdown.

Stay safe out there!

Most importantly, remember to stay safe. This is a tricky time for everyone, and everyone is having a completely different experience of the same restrictions.

Remember that it’s ok to have off-days, down days and just downright boring days.
Remember that we will get through this and we’ll be able to resume ‘normal’ life in the future.

There are plenty of things you can do to continue to make progress towards your goals – even in lockdown, but it’s also ok to just make it through any way you can.

Extra hours have been made available for massage once lockdown lifts, so make sure to book in. You can also purchase massage vouchers – the perfect Christmas gift for a loved one, or yourself.
